The tale begins with a 17 year old Rapunzel who resides in an isolated tower where she has lived since a baby. Rapunzel does not know that the woman she calls mom, Gothel, stole her from her parents and has kept her locked in the tower for her own selfish reasons. Gothel keeps Rapunzel a prisoner in the tower because Rapunzels 70 feet of beautiful hair has the magical power to keep the old witch young. Rapunzel however longs to see the outside world.
Another main character in the film is Flynn Rider. Rider is a handsome bandit who scales the tower to become Rapunzels unwilling bridge to the outside world. Rapunzel however proves herself not to be a damsel in distress and the bandit often meets painful resistance. The film also has a host of supporting characters. Maximux the horse is a resourceful character who has an ability to track outlaws. A sly chameleon who stays loyally by Rapunzels side and many more wonderful characters created by the Disney animators.
The original Brothers Grimm Version:
The story of Rapunzel was first published in Germany in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm. The story is about a couple who wanted a child. The happened to live next door to an enchantress who had a garden with a Rapunzel plant growing. Rapunzel is a form of lettuce.
The story goes on to tell that the pregnant woman wanted some Rapunzel and her husband broke into the garden to get some. On the third night of getting the leaves for his wife, the enchantress caught the husband and accused him of theft. He begged her for mercy and she agreed on the condition that their child would be surrendered to her when born.When the child was born the enchantress took her to raise and named her Rapunzel.
At twelve years old, the enchantress locked Rapunzel in a tower in the middle of the woods. The tower did not have stairs or a door and only had one room with a window. When the witch would visit she would stand beneath the window and recipe: "Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your long hair, so that I may climb the golden stair.When Rapunzel would hear this chant she would wrap her hair around a hook near the window and drop it down for the enchantress to climb.
As the story continues, one day a prince riding in the forest heard Rapunzel singing. Attracted by her voice he found the tower but could not get in. He continued to visit so he could listen to her sing. One day he happened to see the enchantress visit and learned how to gain access to the tower. After the witch left he approached the tower and called to Rapunzel to let down her hair. He climbed up, made her acquaintance and asked her to marry him.
They planned for her escape and each night the prince would bring her silk so that she could weave a ladder to escape. In the original Grimm version of the story, the witch found out, became angry and cut Rapunzel's long braided hair. She then cast Rapunzel out into the wilderness to fend for herself. On the princes next visit, when he climbed Rapunzel's hair he was greeted not by Rapunzel but by the witch who told him he would never see her again.In anguish, the prince jumped from the tower and was blinded by thorns below.
The prince wandered the countryside until one day he heard Rapunzel singing as she fetched water.He had been reunited with his love. Falling into her arms, her tears restored his vision.
In one version of the story, the witch un-braided Rapunzel's hair after the prince jumped out the window but the hair slipped away trapping the witch in the tower.
There are many adaptations of the original story including the release of the Walt Disney Pictures Tangled. The story of Rapunzel has entertained children and adults alike for hundreds of years and will continue to enchant far into the future.
